firstsite is a contemporary visual arts organisation based in Colchester. It presents and contextualises contemporary art through exhibitions, talks, film screenings, publications and events, and delivers an ambitious range of projects to schools, community groups and artists living in the region.

Based at the Minories Art Gallery for more than fifteen years, firstsite now has a new permanent home in a purpose-built space in the heart of Colchester.

Designed by Rafael Viñoly Architects and led by a strong partnership of local authority and regional bodies, firstsite’s iconic new building is unique in the East of England, offering galleries, learning studios, social spaces, a shop and a café.

Entry to firstsite is free. Visitors can choose to enjoy the artworks, take part in an educational activity, browse the firstsite shop, meet up with friends or simply enjoy a cup of tea in MUSA café. firstsite also offers a wealth of spaces for commercial hires of every description, from conferences and seminars to parties and functions.

As part of its Artists’ Support Programme, firstsite guides the professional development of artists in the East of England. From producing artists’ resources to facilitating networking events and talks, firstsite is continually developing this strand of its work.
